Our granddaughters and eldest daughter were here from Vancouver visiting and had experienced five flight cancellations in their efforts to return home. They were, thankfully, finally successful. The house is much lonelier with them gone. It is quiet, but the persistent sound of the news droning on about deaths and the spread of this virus, remind me that sometimes quiet is bliss.

We live on St. Pete Beach. The weather is perversely glorious on this the first day of the Public Beaches in our county being closed. We can still go down to the sand and Gulf, as our stretch of the beach is privately owned by our condo association down to the mean-high waterline.  I wish I could head straight down to the sea and sand and waste away the day.  But, before I can indulge the desire to forget the daunting task before me and the fear of this damned virus, I have a business to save. I have employees and clients depending upon me. I own a real estate brokerage that has a heavy component of property management with just under 125 properties in our portfolio. Almost all of them are vacation rentals. Over the last ten days, as of 3-21-20, we have had many cancellations, amounting to lost revenues in excess of $174,000, for us and our property owners.  Prior to that, we also lost three sales amounting to almost $2,250,000 in sales volume due to the virus and the stock market volatility.  Just a few days in and our losses are climbing at an alarming amount.

My team have accepted pay cuts. One member, I had to lay off. I had nothing for her to do.  It was so very painful. She comforted me and we commiserated the unfairness of this situation.  I am humbled by her reaction and those of my remaining team. Their love of our company and their desire to have us all succeed is, I know, something that has been borne of respect for each other and unity of purpose.  For Local Real Estate: The Good News is: Inventory in Pinellas County is 27% down from this time last year.
